Amsterdammer Cheese. Understand it while you taste it.

We found it odd that the global city of Amsterdam—in the land of cheese—no longer had its own cheese.

That’s why, in honor of the city’s 750th anniversary, we’re giving the municipality its own cheese back: Amsterdammer Cheese, made from milk sourced right from its backyard.

But there’s more. For every kilo of cheese you buy, we plant one square meter of biodiversity. Together, we’ll contribute to over 100,000 m² of extra biodiversity in the Amstelland region.

Where's the party?

Well, here’s the party! In Amsterdam, of course. Or… is it?

Amsterdam was founded in the 12th century, near the village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. At that time, the area was governed by the Lords of Amstel under the authority of the Bishop of Utrecht. While the Lords collaborated with the Bishop, they sought to gain more power for themselves.

Around the Amstel River, people built dikes to keep the land dry. This led to the establishment of a small settlement, which eventually grew into Amsterdam. In 1275, the inhabitants were granted the right to transport goods toll-free by Count Floris V of Holland, making the village an attractive hub for traders.

The settlement was originally called “Amstelledamme,” referring to the dam in the Amstel River. Thanks to trade and protection from flooding, the village grew rapidly. Eventually, the name was shortened to “Amsterdam,” and the city began to thrive. It all started as a small village near Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, where the Boeren van Amstel still reside today.

Extra Biodiversity Through Amsterdammer Cheese

Would you like to contribute to your local environment? Now it’s incredibly simple. For every kilo of cheese you buy, we plant one square meter of ditch bank with biodiverse crops. Together, we can create 100,000 square meters of additional biodiversity within two years.

We’re not doing this alone — we’re working alongside our farmers and with the support of the Agrarisch Collectief Noord Holland Zuid, who take care of the planting and monitoring. This ensures that every kilo of cheese truly results in one square meter of extra biodiversity!

But that’s not all! While we highly recommend putting on your boots or clogs and heading out into the fields, you can now also enjoy your own slice of biodiversity from the comfort of your couch. Using drone footage, satellite images, and updates from our farmers right from the fields, you can follow the progress almost in real-time!

Please note: this is still in its early stages, but we’re sure to pleasantly surprise you in the coming weeks!
